What is an Ankle Foot Orthosis?

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is an externally applied orthopedic device that controls the position and motion of the ankle, compensates for weakness, or corrects deformities. AFOs are among the most commonly prescribed lower-limb orthoses.

Conditions Treated with AFOs

• Foot drop — inability to lift the front part of the foot
• Stroke recovery — to maintain proper foot position during gait
• Cerebral palsy — pediatric AFOs for gait correction
• Multiple sclerosis — to support weakened ankle muscles
• Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease — for progressive foot deformity
• Post-fracture rehabilitation — controlled ankle immobilization

Types of AFOs

Solid AFO

Provides maximum ankle stability and blocks all ankle motion. Used for severe weakness or instability.

Hinged AFO

Allows controlled ankle dorsiflexion while preventing foot drop. The most versatile option for ambulatory patients.

Dynamic AFO (DAFO)

Made from thin, flexible plastic. Provides support while allowing more natural movement. Common in pediatric applications.
